OUR STORY

Our Future, Our Voice

Seeds of Change is a student-lead organization at Academy of the Canyons that aims to fight climate change through sustainable gardening, education, and community composting. Our goal is to provide a relaxed and supportive environment for students that gives back to the community and to the earth by inspiring individuals to make a change in the way that they treat our planet.

ABOUT SEEDS OF CHANGE

Seeds of Change started during the summer of 2019 when two students (Chloe Hodge and Samea Derrick) decided they wanted to share their love of gardening with their fellow classmates at Academy of the Canyons. Samea's family had recently taken up composting at home and Chloe wished to teach about the importance of sustainable agricultural habits. It started out small with the implementation of two bright yellow compost bins in the school plaza but they saw the potential that this club held and started a Friday morning compost drop off for the whole community. They started volunteering at Cottonwood Urban Farm, in Panorama City, in order to further their knowledge of compost and healthy agricultural habits, and started to give interactive lectures to students of all ages. They have been welcomed at Bridgeport Elementary School and have recently partnered with CalArts. In December of 2019, they were granted 1/2 an acre of land by College of the Canyons and are working vigilantly to turn it into a flourishing agricultural learning center for their school and community.

WHY COMPOST?

Seeds of Change is a club focused on educating students of all ages about the current climate emergency and providing manageable, everyday solutions that can help our planet in the long haul.

Healthy soil has the potential to sequester carbon from the atmosphere and turn it into rich nutrients for plants. When food waste is sent to the landfill the waste degrades anaerobically (without oxygen) and releases methane gas into the atmosphere which is 30 times more potent as a heat trapping gas compared carbon dioxide. An easy solution to this problem is to compost! When you compost not only are you reducing the amount of waste in the landfill but you are also reducing the amount of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere and helping us move toward a circular economy.
